2014 Aprilia Tuono V4 R APRC

Aprilia have updated the V4R streetfighter for 2014 from the V4 engine to 170bhp. The APRC electronics package has been fine-tuned for further finesse and all-out performance and the bike now gets adjustable 3-level anti-lock brakes (ABS), which can also be switched off completely by the rider.

According to Aprilia, the Tuono V4R is a full-on superbike, albeit one with high handlebars and ergonomics that make it easy for the bike to be used on the street in everyday road and traffic conditions.

For 2014, the V4R gets a better padded seat for improved longer distance comfort, a bigger, 18.5-litre fuel tank for increased range and new, fully adjustable 43mm USD forks from Sachs, which have separate adjustments for compression and rebound damping.

The 2014 Tuono V4R also gets an updated APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) electronics package. The APRC package includes a wheelie control system and has a self-calibrating function that automatically compensates for tyre circumference, allowing the rider to choose from a variety of tyres available for the Tuono.

Braking performance on the 2014 Tuono, which weighs 185 kilos dry, has been improved, with the bike getting radial-mount Brembo monobloc callipers and twin 320mm steel brake discs at the front. At the same time, the bike’s 65-degree 1,000cc V4 has been pumped up a bit and now produces 170 horsepower and 11,500rpm and 111.5Nm of torque at 9,500 revs.

Along with revised gear ratios, the hike in power output results in significantly improved acceleration. Aprilia’s revisions include a 2.7 bump in horsepower for 170 at a lower 11,500 rpm due to an overhaul on its 999.6cc powerplant.

Along with power gains, the Tuono V4 R receives Bosch 9MP ABS, a larger fuel tank, and a new seat for better overall street performance and ergonomics.

2014 Yamaha YZF-R6

Nothing in Yamaha’s announcement mentions any changes besides the color, so it’s a safe assumption these Race Blu models are otherwise the same as the 2013 models. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that only the Race Blu versions are otherwise similar to last year’s models and Yamaha may still have some surprises in store.

Yamaha retains the full aggressive nature of the YZF-R6, carrying on the racing heritage: chip-controlled intake and throttle, dual fuel injectors per cylinder and the convenient slipper clutch for safer downshifting without rear wheel hopping on the asphalt.

A GP-style titanium muffler and magnesium engine covers have been used to shave off some weight, as well as a magnesium rear subframe. With the extremities of the new R6 on the light side, mass is centralized for increased stability and handling.

Yamaha’s YZF-R6 will be available in three colors: grey ($10,990) and red or Yamaha Blue for US$11,190. The YZF-R1 returns with three color schemes: grey for $14,290 and either red or Yamaha Blue for an additional US$200.

With the FZ-09 now filling the slot once held by the departing FZ8, there was still room for an open-class sporting standard, so, the FZ1 returns in Pearl White for US$10,790. Finally, the inline-Four powered FZ6R is back in either red/white/black or black for US$6850.

My Favorite Japanese Dual-Sport Motorcycle - Suzuki DR650SE

The Suzuki DR650 is a long standing model in Suzuki's lineup, introduced in 1990 as a replacement for the DR600 model. The DR is a dual-sport motorcycle with a counterbalanced, single cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine that develops 46 horsepower.

In 1991, the first electric start model was introduced, namely the DR650RSE. In 1992 the Djebel/Dakar model was replaced with the DR650R. This model also saw improvements in the exhaust system, a smaller tank and 8kg weight reduction.

In 1996 the DR650SE was introduced, replacing the previous models. The engine was radically redesigned, reducing its power but allowing for more smooth delivery. The bike's weight was also reduced by around 25 kg (55 lb).

In 2002, the DR's styling was updated with Suzuki's widely recognized yellow off-road racing colors and graphics.

The 2013 SE model has the factory option of lowering the seat height by 45mm for shorter riders. This involves lowering the front and rear suspension. A shorter side stand is also needed. The SE seat is narrow and firm. The SE has no tachometer but with standard gearing will cruise comfortably at 110-115 kph.

For a single cylinder bike it is quite smooth due to the effective balancer shaft. At 120kph it still has power for overtaking. The 40mm Mikuni Carb gives smooth power flow. It has electric start only.

The 2013 SE model gives about 20.5km/l or a range of 240km from the 13L tank.
